Lisbon, on foot — a walking guide

Lisbon is a city that rewards slowness. The trams are charming but the hills are better walked. The miradouros are famous but the best views are the ones you stumble onto from a side street you took by accident. The restaurants are excellent but the best meal I had was a pastel de nata eaten standing outside a bakery at seven in the morning, before the city woke up.

The neighborhoods worth knowing

Mouraria is older and quieter than Alfama and has almost none of the tourist infrastructure. Principe Real has the best bookshops and the garden where everyone eventually ends up on a Sunday afternoon. LX Factory on a weekend morning, before the crowds arrive, is a different place entirely from what it becomes by noon.

Golden hour at the miradouros

Go to Miradouro da Graça instead of Santa Luzia. Arrive forty minutes before sunset. Bring wine from the supermarket around the corner. Watch the light change over the river and the city below. This is the version of Lisbon that stays with you.
